Zanzibar receives first 10 electric buses at Malindi Port
Zanzibar electric buses arrive, marking the start of the Zan Bus project aimed at modernizing public transport in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar has received its first 10 electric buses at Malindi Port, marking the launch of the Zan Bus project. The buses arrived on the evening of 25 January 2026. They were promptly transported to the Kijangwani New Bus Terminal in the West Urban District.
Officials said the buses will start passenger services in February 2026. The project aims to reduce congestion, modernise public transport, and introduce cleaner mobility across the islands. It forms part of the government’s broader plan to upgrade infrastructure under President Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
Zanzibar electric buses start rollout
The Zanzibar State House announced that the electric bus network will launch in phases. It will be managed through the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF). Unitrans Transport Company from South Africa operates the first phase of the network. Planned routes include Buyu, Chukwani, Mnazi Mmoja to Malindi, and Airport to Malindi.
The government said the project aims to reduce emissions and support sustainable mobility. It also supports Zanzibar’s long‑term economic goals under the Blue Economy agenda.
Infrastructure upgrades to support the fleet
The Kijangwani Bus Terminal will serve as the central operational hub for the network. New bus stations and drop‑off points will be installed at the Airport, Malindi Port, and other high‑traffic areas. Officials said these upgrades are designed to improve travel reliability and accommodate the rapid shift to electric transport.
The rollout comes as the Isles government continues expanding road networks and investing in long‑term urban mobility systems. Construction of new corridors and improved road links is underway to ease congestion.
